「Guide for Using Taxis in Seoul」

                                       written by Susan LIM

Taxis

are a useful means of transportation

for travelers when they first arrive at

 unfamiliar travel destinations.

In this posting,

I will post about how to use a taxi in

Seoul for unfamiliar travelers such as

the types of taxi of Seoul,

the fares of taxi of Seoul,

how and where to get a taxi,

tipping and payment for the fare.

[Types of taxi in Seoul]

Seoul has two major types of taxis:

Ilban taxi (standard taxi- orange or grey),

and Mobeom taxi (deluxe taxi - black )

- Ilban Taxi ( Standard Taxi) -

Using a taxi in Seoul

Ilban taxi has two colors ; orange and

silver. Orange taxis usually own by a

taxi company and silver taxis privately

own by the taxi driver. But there is no

 significant difference in use.

Actually Ilban taxi has different colors

depending on their region in Korea ;

Ilban taxis in Seoul are generally orange

and silver as mentioned above.

- Mobeom Taxi (Deluxe Taxi ) -

Using taxis in Seoul

Mobeom(deluxe) taxis are black with a

yellow sign on the top. Both sides of the

taxi have the Deluxe Taxi sign.

They have slightly more passenger space

and a higher standard of service than

Ilban regular taxis. This means that the

fare are much higher than regular taxis,

but there is no late-night surcharge.

Deluxe taxis can usually be found at stands

located in front of hotels, stations, airport,

bus terminals, and major city streets.

Mobeom taxi (deluxe taxi) can be found

only in larger cities such as Seoul or Pusan.

The deluxe taxi also have a line of van's

that are ideal for larger groups or to bring

heavy luggage to and from the airport.

[ Taxi Fares in Korea ]

Taxi Fares (as of March 1, 2019)

Taxi fares in Korea

Taxi Fares are shown on the meter and

all taxies have meters. Metered fares are

based on the type of taxi, travel distance,

and various surcharges for time of day

or heavy traffic.

For Ilban taxis (standard taxi ) have 20%

surcharge during late-night (00:00-04:00)

and when traveling out of the city.

Ilban taxi fares begin at KRW3800 in Seoul

and increase by KRW 100 according to

time & distance (every 132meters), while

mobeom taxi fares begin at KRW6500 and

increase by KRW 200.  Airport tolls will

usually be passed on to the passenger -

over and above the meter charge. It is

also possible now to negotatiate a flat

rate from the airport.

[How / Where to get a taxi]

Taxis are plentiful on the street

and relatively inexpensive in Seoul.

You can usually get a taxi as follow;

Taking a taxi in Seoul, Korea

In Seoul,

the most common way to get

taxi is to flag one on the street.

When you hail a taxi on the street,

stick out your hand, palm down and

wave your hand up and down.

② Taxi stand

You can go to a taxi stnad to take a

taxi. Taxi stands ususlly have a yellow

canopy with TAXI sign on the top.

[ Payment & Tipping for Taxi]

Payment for taxi fares can be made

in cash, by credit card or T-money.

T-money card is highy recommended

for travelers who are not familiar with

Korean currency.

If you need, you can ask a receipt

for taxi fare. Receipts are available

from all taxis in Seoul.

If the taxi driver does not understand

'receipt' in English, say it in Korean:

" Yong-su-jung choo-say-yo."

(it means 'give me a receipt'.)

Tipping is not expected and common

in using taxis in Korea but 10% tip might

be appropriate for special services.

windshield or by the cap light on top.

Seoul International Taxi

Korea offers special international taxis,

which are driven by taxi drivers who can

speak one or more foreign languages such

as  English, Japanese, or Chinese.

International taxis look the same as

standard taxis, except they feature the

words "International Taxi" on the body

and the top of the car.
